Storage Tips
Packing Boxes
Uniform sized boxes maximize space. Use smaller boxes for books
and other heavy items. Fill boxes to capacity and tape closed.
If necessary, stuff open areas with plain newspaper to prevent
collapsing when stacked. Use a large permanent marker to
identify contents of boxes.
Appliances
Clean, and dry interiors thoroughly. Place a shallow container
of baking soda in fridges and freezers. Always store appliances
in upright position.
Framed Artwork and
Mirrors
Pack individually on edge, never flat. Protect with heavy duty
cardboard. There are narrow boxes available for this
purpose.
Furniture and
Mattresses
Keep upholstered furniture protected by covering with plastic
sheeting, sheets or blankets. Mattresses can be placed in
cardboard mattress boxes or large plastic bags. By breaking
down items (such as table legs) and storing large furniture
(like tabletops and sofas) on end, much space can be saved in
the unit.
Fragile Items
Don't overpack boxes. Use plenty of cushioning around items,
leaving no loose areas that could allow shifting of contents.
Close and tape boxes securely. Add "Fragile" stickers as
necessary. Use furniture drawers to hold odd-shaped,
lightweight objects that have been wrapped in
bubble-wrap.
Gardening Items
Trash cans will handily store shovels rakes and other
long-handled garden tools. Lawn and garden equipment, must be
drained of any fluids prior to storage in order to avoid
corrosive damage.
Loading the Storage
Space
Consider leaving a walk way around the perimeter of your
storage space. This provides ventilation as well as allowing
access to the back of the unit. The front of your storage space
should hold items you'll want to be easily seen and accessible.
Begin stacking by placing the heavier boxes at the bottom.
Delicate and lighter boxes should be stored on top. By placing
furniture on pallets or boards, you'll provide additional
protection. A plastic sheet placed over your stored items adds
yet another layer of protection for your
valuables.
